One of my senators, Elissa Slotkin, addressed the bill from the perspective of a former federal employee. She said that, while she knows this will cause problems for federal workers, it's necessary to protect many other things that the bill will destroy, especially funding for the Great Lakes. Hello? Largest bodies of fresh water in the entire country, anyone?? Maybe try to keep them safe from pollution and other harmful effects (like draining them to water golf courses?)? Even federal employees are begging Democrats not to sign on to this travesty of a budget bill.

I only got through to my own Senators. When I tried to get Schumer it's either busy or I get nothing. I did manage to leave him a message at one of his satellite offices in NY, but that's it.

He also released a letter about his "decision" to the NYT; It's garbage.

Senate Minority Leader Schumer enjoying a private, tax payer funded Democratic Senate Caucus lunch while insisting that the only way forward is to acquiesce to the Republican’s Continuing Resolution is so pathetic.

Short term pain is worth it. Choice is to permanently lose things like Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security and many other things people count on, watch businesses fail, increase pollution, etc, or force the Republicans' hands. Yes, we will also suffer, especially Government employees, but better that than having them lose their jobs permanently. Seems like a no-brainer to me and any Democrat who caves will be on my s**t list, including my own Senators.

It’s really unclear to me. If you read on Chuck Schumer’s Bluesky, there’s a whole bunch of really good arguments to prevent shut down.

It’s confusing.

I read it too. I am not confused, I am conflicted.

Schumer's points are good, but not good enough considering what is coming.

Once you acquiesce power, it takes a LOT of effort/blood & lives to get it back - if ever.

Someone in Bsky compared his behavior to a person in an abusive relationship.

Coming up with contorted excuses to stay with his abuser.

We no longer belong amongst the industrialized/democratic countries, we are a banana republic. One party that rules, the other acquiesce.

We do not have a healthy economy, the one emerging will be extremely unequal, like russia. The extremely rich and the extremely poor.

We just made the Human Right Violations country list.

schumer will not get anything from gop, they have NEVER acquiesced or compromised in good faith.

One characteristic of a banana republic is the brain drain; authoritarians favor ignorant and acquiescent people. They have wealth, go shopping and get health care in the industrialized countries. The people are too poor to even go to school.

I am conflicted because my brain tells me "get out" "accept that job", and my heart says "stay fight with your sisters"

What about USA?

Sadly, both of my senators are MAGA. I've sent emails but don't expect they'll have any effect.
