More Missing Text Messages Link Trump to Coup Plot
In addition to missing texts from the Secret Service, messages of then-acting HHS Chief Chad Wolf and Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli are also missing.
Internal emails have now confirmed that text messages of former President Donald Trump’s acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf and acting deputy secretary Ken Cuccinelli are missing for a key period leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. These text messages have been missing for over a year.
According to internal records obtained by the Project on Government Oversight, the Department of Homeland Security notified the agency’s inspector general in late February of 2021, that Wolf and Cuccinelli’s texts were lost in a “reset” of their government phones as they were leaving their jobs in January 2021 during the Biden transition.
This latest confirmation of more missing phone messages from key Trump agency officials follows other recent critical revelations that seem intrinsically linked to the investigation into what role Donald Trump played in the attack on the US Capitol on January 6. As investigators in Congress and the Department of Justice try to piece together the events surrounding January 6, we now know that critical texts messages are missing from both the Secret Service and Homeland Security.
In addition to this, the Secret Service announced yesterday that Director James Murray, who had announced his retirement in early July, has now delayed his plan to leave and will extend his tenure as the agency “continues to deal with the ongoing controversies related to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack.”
