Gun Violence This Week

There were six separate mass shooting incidents in the United States this past week, where eight people were killed and 26 were injured. • Elon Musk has been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022, and at one point, Putin asked the billionaire to avoid activating his Starlink satellite internet service over Taiwan as a favor to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

• The Trump campaign was informed this week that hackers may have gained access to data from their phones, through a breach of American telecommunications systems.

• An NPR investigation that was published this week found that, since 2022, Donald Trump has threatened to prosecute, investigate, arrest or otherwise punish perceived enemies more than 100 times, including attacks on fellow Americans he calls "the enemy from within."

• The Department of Justice warned Elon Musk’s America PAC this week that his $1 million sweepstakes to registered voters in swing states may violate federal law.

• Former Marine and Deputy Sheriff John Mark Dougan, who fled to Moscow to become a Kremlin propagandist, is working directly with Russian military intelligence to create deepfakes, and circulate misinformation against Kamala Harris’s campaign.

• A Russian-aligned propaganda, network notorious for creating deepfake videos last week, appears to be behind the coordinated effort to promote fabricated claims that Minnesota governor and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz sexually assaulted a former student.

• The Biden administration has proposed a rule that would expand access to contraceptive products, including making over-the-counter birth control and condoms free for the first time for women of reproductive age who have private health insurance.

• The exonerated Central Park Five sued Donald Trump for defamation on Monday, alleging “reckless disregard” for the truth and intent to cause “severe emotional distress” by erroneously claiming during the September debate that they had “killed a person” and admitted guilt. Read full lawsuit here:
