Warning: Trump Has a New Strategy on Abortion
Trump has recently told insiders that he favors a 16-week abortion ban, and he has started questioning possible vice presidential choices by asking them if they agree with his strategy.
In order to curry favor with Republican donors and voters, Donald Trump has told advisors and allies that he likes the idea of a 16-week national abortion ban with three exceptions, in cases of rape or incest, or to save the life of the mother. “Know what I like about 16?” Trump told a source, “It’s even. It’s four months.”
According to a campaign advisor, Trump uses a caveat question when interviewing his potential vice-presidential candidates, asking if they are “OK on abortion.” according to that source he has a very strong reaction to anyone telling him that they don’t accept his “three exceptions” rule because he is confident that Republicans will not win any election with a complete and total abortion ban position.
While it is easy to dismiss Trump as crazy or unskilled in the political arena, it is time to face certain facts about his viability in the 2024 Presidential Election. Trump won the electoral college vote in 2016, when no one else thought he could, and he still maintains a substantial lead in the Republican Primary contests. Moreover, Trump is zoning in on the losing issue of abortion rights for the Republican Party, and taking notice of how limitations on the procedure have galvanized swing voters all over the country.
Another factor we must all face as we head into November, is Donald Trump’s exceptional ability to take the temperature of his supporters in order to sell something to a crowd. He is spending a substantial amount of time touring the country with his infamous rally performances and that is only helping his understanding of where a majority of Republican and Independent voters will draw the line in their support of abortion rights. By compromising on three limited exceptions, he is giving conservatives a way to sell their hate for Joe Biden to voters concerned with reproductive rights. -
