Donald Trump asked for it. Following the search on his Mar-a-Lago estate, the former president posted an unhinged rant that his Florida resort had been “raided” by the FBI and claimed that the unprecedented move was “politically motivated.” As usual, Trump gave no examples and offered no real proof of sabotage, other than his inflamed rhetoric.
“These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” Trump claimed in a lengthy email statement that was sent out by his Save America political committee. “After working and cooperating with the relevant [g]overnment agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate,” decried Trump: “They even broke into my safe!”
Donald Trump intentionally set the stage by talking about the search and painting the scene in some kind of abrasive and invasive light —this was his first mistake. Late on Thursday, he made the second by calling for the “immediate” release of the federal warrant the FBI used to search his Florida estate. Hours earlier, the Justice Department had asked a court to unseal the warrant, with Attorney General Merrick Garland citing the “substantial public interest in this matter.”
