I think the debates are a mistake.

I could not have put this better myself. Biden has everything to lose in a debate with that jackass Trump. If you're a Trump fan boy, or girl I guess, then you're not tuning in to hear his well thought-out policy decisions or how he will fix the supposed "crises" plaguing America. No, they tune in to see a circus freak, bombastic, taunting, name calling, bullying, all of that. Anybody who honestly takes Fat Don seriously as a politician has their head stuck up their ass. Joe is an old school politician still adhering to decorum, discussion and policy positions beyond #1. ME. I just hope his handlers are working with him to turn the tables. Trump wins because he throws people off balance, he's surprising, breaks all norms, is rude, and most of us don't know what to do in the face of that, we freeze. I think if Joe were to give it right back and call that failed human exactly what he is and point out his failures, criminal indictments, call him a loser the tables would turn and Trump would be the one caught off guard. He has to play to the audience and we are now a dumb country so there you go.

I disagree, in part. I think, whatever else is at stake, this is a net positive for Joe.

Yeah, lots of stuff could go wrong. He's been doing this forever.

One simple reason; a lot of people haven't seen Drumpf unedited in awhile except for his cultist rallies and post-court press releases.

I think the debates will show Donald to be a befuddled sundowning grandpa in a way even some of his cultists can't deny.

Maybe without a live audience they'll insist it was staged or deepfake. But they'd claim that anyhow. If need be, they'd make up a technology on the spot to make it possible to deepfake a live broadcast.

I mean these are the "chem trails turn frogs gay" people.

I always appreciate your insight, perspective and honesty. Frankly, I'm guessing that Biden and his team are counting on Trump backing out while, of course, blaming it on Biden. And his minions will buy it...but I'm doubting others will. It's complicated because this whole debate issue is mired in both psychology and politics. So, I'm not sure Biden is thinking this is much of a risk. The way the debates are structured, if the moderators do their jobs, Trump will barely get to speak. But, the only way Biden can "win" is really to bait Trump and make Trump go batshit crazy. These are not "debates" - we haven't had a real debate in quite a while. But, I disagree with a lot of commentators who say these...whatever they are...would be a win for Biden. Maybe, if Trump refuses to participate, it could be?

America feeds on fame and glory and sensationiza and shock and scandal. any more media for Trump is bad. I'm understanding this in an abstract sense. I am accepting this viewpoint because even if Biden wins, it's more of a win for Trump. He is winning as a martyr or a victor, either way. The event gives him another opportunity to communicate messages to his violent supporters. That's neither a hypothesis nor prediction, but is already happened once.

The idea of Debates makes me very nervous. Always a possibility, someone (we know who) will back out with an outrageous excuse.

Either Orange Menace's minions will convince him that he will "own the libs" by refusing to participate in the debates with Biden, or the whack-a-mole game that is his rapidly deteriorating brain will have a seizure of self-preservation.

I wouldn't worry to much about that last poll. It was only of registered voters, not likely voters. Among likely voters, Biden is doing fine in battleground states.

Here's my take. Feel free to read, comment, and share: https://ellensilvers.com/f/ignore-polls-and-vote #IgnorePollsAndVoteBlue

Who is your intended audience for this argument against the debates? Joe Biden has already decided. Why be negative about it now, even if you may have a strong case?

Calling out what is happening in real time is my job, and I have presented the best arguments for both sides - that is hardly being negative, especially when I am rooting hard for Biden. Also, when people who support Biden are so divided over whether this is a good idea, it's worth writing about.

Thank you for your reply and for all your great writing. I'm rooting for Biden too, hoping he has a strong debate like in 2020. His 'Would you shut up, man!' is a classic.
