This morning, NBC News reported that Russian and Chinese state media have been spreading conspiracy theories that the novel coronavirus started in an American laboratory and are attempting to push the message out to audiences in the Middle East. Both Russia and China have extensive state media channels that broadcast in Arabic to millions of homes across the Middle East. The NBC News verification unit monitors the output of these channels, and has found several instances of both governments attempting to spread deliberate
My trust in the media has diminished. I remember the original "network" news, short and to the point and no commercials. When they started commercials I remember my dad saying, "well that's end of that, they're now bought and paid for."
Is this blame game leading to more than just a war of words? It makes me wonder.
It is becoming more and more difficult to evaluate and use validated sources for news and information in a world full of purposeful disinformation and uncorroborated information driven by the speed of news cycles. I have long thought that news should not be driven by advertising revenue as a way to upgrade ethics and fact checking prior to publication or broadcast.
As a Jew, I am particularly sensitive about conspiracy theories, since so many of them target my co-religionists. They infuriate me beyond belief.
