In response to the drastic increase of challenges from the right against controversial books, often involving important themes of race, gender and sexuality, let's read some banned books!
Is there a specific format for this book club exchange of ideas? I would like to suggest that when you name the book of the month or week, you give us all a short list of questions to be thinking about as we are reading…maybe 2 or 3.
Thank you for doing this, Amee! I have been collecting banned books and reading them as fast as I can. I am thinking of putting a "Banned Books Free Little Library" outside my home, but am afraid the books might get destroyed (burned!!) by local yokels. I do have a question about Callin and how private it is. I have protected my identity on twitter and want to be careful what information I share if I subscribe to Callin. Will I still be able to participate in the book club without Callin? Thank you so much!
Believe it or not , I went for my second Masters in library science at Simmons , where I was teaching a whole other topic. First of all we should all pay homage to Librarians! In my Reference class the topic of Book Banning came up snd their was a Very lively out loud discussion on this topic. FINAL EXIT had just come out( the how to of suicide) and for a Library Science class it was a wild discussion.ironically, in the end everyone in class agreed it should be in the stacks.
I never achieved my masters Anglo-American Cataloguing did me in, and the web exploded but it was a humbling experience. I sincerely believe access to books , any book of any type ( I live in a small New England town and one of our librarians does put certain novels in a section dedicated as Smut but we are small but we love her) is actually the defining attribute of a Democracy. Everything falls out of knowledge and books are knowledge. So I say go for it Amee talk about it on Callin! Think of it this way there is a kid out there trying to figure out if they are gay and books may save their life, or a Jewish kid who needs to know about why Bubbe has s tattoo on her arm, or my own bi racial niece and nephew wonder why a slur was thrown . Go for it! ( how is your Mother doing?
Finishing two other banned books ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ and ‘Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl’. Beloved was on my list to re-read, which I’ll do as soon as I finish my other two banned books, a new 2022 journey that I’m on. Excited abt joining this banned books club!
NOTE: All SHERO Book Club posts and podcasts will be kept free and available to the public, so join us!

This is a great idea-does anyone else like a study guide as they are reading the book? Should I add this for our next book selection?
Are you Amee’s Mom? You should be so proud!! Get well quick
Why, yes I am Amee’s mom, and I am a very lucky woman. Thanks for appreciating her and thanks for the good wishes,Patricia!
I think the name tipped me off ! She is a treasure
Count me in!
Yay! We have the librarian expert in on the deal!

Great idea! I’m so in. I’ve been buying banned books as my personal protest and to always remember. 13 and counting. Thanks for doing this.
I'm currently reading "The Bluest Eye" and "Beloved" is next on my list. 🙂
This is a fantastic idea!

Amee. I would love to join. I have been on a break, so I’m a bit late. This is a great idea.
