Republicans are about to switch up their messaging by admitting what they can no longer deny: that Trump’s actions with Ukraine did constitute a quid pro quo. The reasoning for this is simple — there is just too much testimony and too much evidence from too many credible sources to continue to deny the allegations levied by House Democrats. As public hearings start, the optics will be even more damning. By admitting that there was a quid pro quo but attempting to spin that there was nothing illegal about this bargain and therefore Trump’s actions do not rise to a level of criminality typically required by the courts, the GOP is counting on the majority of the American public to stay ignorant about the parameters of what constitutes an impeachable offense.
Thank you again for your hard work, Amee. I don’t disagree with a single thing that you wrote. However, the problem is that if my narrow sampling of Republicans is any indication, no amount of evidence/facts/arguments will EVER change their minds. They get their “news” from Fox News and/or other similarly “reliable” websites. So, unfortunately, there will be zero pressure on any Republican Senators to vote to remove him from office once the House does impeach.
Here’s what really scares and upsets me: Despite the mountains of evidence and the obvious impropriety of what this vile excuse for a human did (and does on a daily basis), his approval rating never really seems to drop. People “vote with their pocketbooks”, the vast debt that the country is incurring notwithstanding. Until/unless the economy tanks—-and history says that that is inevitable—he will not only survive this impeachment, he will win re-election in 2020, as horrific as that is to contemplate, because that “tanking” won’t come soon enough. Once he does get re-elected, what remains of our environmental protections will be stripped away, and unless RBG and the other liberal justices can survive forever, the Supreme Court (not to mention the lower courts) will be packed with right wing justices who will strip away every semblance of civil rights and governmental regulation. If this sounds like some sort of impossible, horrific dystopia, just watch it happen.
