Two prominent governors faced off in a debate hosted by Fox News on Thursday, creating more questions about the motivations of DeSantis and Newsom than policy.
I don’t agree with how you describe Newsom and his motivations. or that you describe him as extreme. I think he’s an amazing representative for the democratic party and he’s amazing fighter, something that the Democratic party generally lacks. I love to see Newsom and Mayor Pete going on Fox. I believe they help Democratic Party. I believe Newsom helped Biden last night.
I think that Newsom had a number of reasons to do this "debate" and at least two are good ones, imo. First, he ended speculation that he was running a shadow campaign against Joe, he did a great job of promoting POTUS - his policies and his team. Secondly, of course he is putting himself into play for '28, and why not? I think he did a great job representing us as a Party.
PS, Amy, using "extreme" to describe Newsom in the same vein as DeSantis? I don't get that....
Very astute analysis, and spot on where it concerns DeSantis. Newsome could, indeed, have fallen into the trap of grandstanding to the point where he's made Biden look lesser in comparison, but I'm not quite there yet. Biden's accomplishments still stand out, especially in the way he's handled the recovery from the pandemic and the Hamas/Israel conflict. If the media would just give even scant notice to those things rather than harping on his supposed age problem, or his supposed cognitive problems, Biden would be in much better shape poll-wise.
We should focus more on what the party we support is proposing and the planks of its platform. No matter your constituency bit, comparing yourself to the opposition is a low fucking bar.....

I'm a big fan of Newsom as well-I was referencing the liberal vs conservative divide, more than his policy.
Gavin fan here. His motivation? Showing Dems how to punch back & a free 1-1/2 hr ad on Fox about our values.

So, what is the strategy for debating a criminal, fascist, racist, bigot and traitor? As the general election approaches, this will be an issue.
